How much playlist do you need?
There is no universal ideal playlist length. Start with the time the activity actually needs, then leave enough room that repetition or a sudden ending does not interrupt the moment.
Focus and study
A playlist can cover one planned work period or several blocks. Predictable sequencing matters more than maximizing the number of tracks, and silence may still be better for language-heavy or unfamiliar work.
Running and workouts
Plan for the complete session you want music to accompany, including warm-up and recovery when appropriate. A longer playlist is useful only if its energy arc still matches the session.
Parties and social spaces
Allow room to adapt rather than treating the calculated duration as a fixed program. The people, conversation and changing energy of the room matter more than reaching the final track.
Background listening
Long coverage can reduce queue management, but it does not guarantee variety or good flow. Review transitions and repeated moods as carefully as the total time.
